Font not registered properly? - Evil_Underlord - 09-05-2019 Gimp 2.10.10 Windows 10 I use the Windows font Candara in GIMP on a regular basis. Suddenly, in the last two months,
Candara (new look) in bold is thicker than old Candara. Candar still shows up fine (only one version, and looks normal) in other applications (Word, PowerPoint). I've tried uninstalling Candara and Candara Light (part of the same font family), in case the latter is what's screwing GIMP up. I've reset GIMP's font list from the dockable Fonts toolbox. I've added all the Windows font folders to GIMPs font folder list. I've deleted and reinstalled GIMP completely (but may not have found all its settings, if they're not deleted automatically). This is driving me crazy. Candara works fine everywhere except GIMP, but I can't get it to work there. It feels like there's something wrong with GIMP's font info - maybe after a Windows update added a Candara Light? - but my efforts haven't fixed it. Suddenly, in the last two months, That does indicate there has been a change in the font. For example, if a font is missing it will remain as original until the text tool is applied, then a substitute is used. Have you installed any application that might have come with its own fonts? In days gone-by installing MS Office changed fonts. Quote:In the font list I now have Candara (the new thin one) and Candara #1 (which doesn't really look like Candara). I am not really a Windows User, linux with an old Windows10 virtual machine but taking the four Candara fonts from Win10 screenshot https://i.imgur.com/VYyzvti.jpg Adding to my Gimp 2.10 fonts folder gives a match with the MS document (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/typography/cleartype/pdfs/TypeSamples.pdf) on these fonts. https://i.imgur.com/fO6d16C.jpg A slight difference in spacing over 10 characters, between 0 and -1 but Gimp is governed by pixels. Sometimes very difficult to get rid of a font in Windows and the 'Hide' option does not work with Gimp. No Candara Light in my Win10 - where did that come from? Installing a font in Windows can go two ways, Install for you and the font goes in C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts or for everybody & goes into the system Windows Fonts. Which way did you go? Quote:I've reset GIMP's font list from the dockable Fonts toolbox. I've added all the Windows font folders to GIMPs font folder list. The system fonts by default (not shown) and the Windows User before the Gimp folders. No real need for anything else but of course you can make your own more convenient fonts folder. (I do) Stick with the defaults is best. screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/2cKDA9o.jpg Reinstalling Gimp rarely fixes anything. The Gimp profile is created after Gimp is installed and remains to screw up the re-installation. Quote:This is driving me crazy. With Gimp 2.10 the main complaint is that small text is rendered on the light side, remember Gimp is a raster editor, not vector so there a conversion going on. The best I can suggest is an experiment. I will lend you the four standard Win 10 Candara Fonts to put in your Gimp fonts folder C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\fonts It will mean yet another entry in the fonts list. If they work maybe you can sort the others out. Worth a try. RE: Font not registered properly? - Evil_Underlord - 09-06-2019 Thanks to all for very helpful suggestions. I thought I had searched several fora (including GimpChat) for solutions, but obviously missed this one. I That sounds like exactly what happened to me. have an imminent deadline and need a quick solution, so perhaps wasn't as thorough as I should have been. I'll apply this solution - as I understand it, Gimp would apply fonts in the order of the folders listed in its Fonts setting, so if I put the Gimp fonts folder above others, those fonts would be applied. I'll try out variations, in any case. RE: Font not registered properly? - Evil_Underlord - 09-06-2019 In the end, I decided to take the old Candara fonts, rename them to Candara Old (using FontForge), and install those for all users. That seemed easier than trying to remember which fonts were where, or using a substitute font (Galdeano was closest). Thanks again to all. |
