Missing Fonts - 2.10.14 - for Mac OS? - Barbara Buffington - 03-31-2020

I have discovered that in the most current download - 2.10.14 version - for Mac OS - many of the Fonts are no longer available as they were in the former versions.  For example Mistral and Curlz MT, which in particular I used often in the past, are showing strange symbols instead of the appropriate lettering in the text tool listing and in text boxes I create on images.  Can these Fonts be recovered and if so how can I do that?  Thank you for your kind attention and response regarding this disconcerting snafu.

Here's a screenshot attachment I added [attachment=4167][attachment=4167][attachment=4167]to illustrate what happens when, for example, I try to use the Mistral font...  Isn't anyone else having this problem?

It seems that every time MacOS updates something breaks Gimp.

Unfortunately not many (none) regular MacOS users on this forum to give advice. (I use linux) I tried those fonts in my Gimp 2.10.14 and they work fine here, although there are sometimes similar reports going back several years.

First thing to try is install the fonts for Gimp only use in /Users/your_id/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.10/fonts

Then the official fix page: https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html

In the more-than-probable still not working, report this with your screenshot to the developers
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/

Other possible fixes. Partha http://www.partha.com has an alternative, a McGimp 2.10.18 which might work with the installed fonts.

Thank you, Rich.  Wish me luck......   Wink

I'm on Linux and I've had this exact same problem. I used to be able to use "Clean (Bold)" perfectly fine (example below)

and now, it just appears as garbled symbols:

Help, please.

Barbara raised the issue with the GIMP team: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/4900 where the opinion is that the library that GIMP uses to render fonts no longer supports a particular format of font file.

It appears your only option is to download a version of the font in a different format.

GIMP no longer supports *.ttf?? Seriously??

I don't know how you came to that conclusion. The fonts for which support is dropped are Adode Type1 fonts (*.pfm), a very ancient format which is no longer supported in many places (some windows API don't support it), and there are font converters to convert the Type1 fonts into OpenType ones.

@ktaherig

I tried the Clean Bold font in a kubuntu 20.04 VM and it works here in both a 'snap' Gimp 2.10.18 and the regular 2.10.18 both from ubuntu.
Are all the installed fonts like that? Possibly a language setting. Check in Edit -> Preferences -> Interface

I'm also having this problem. On a mac, running GIMP 2.10.14. Some of the standard Mac fonts that came with my computer (Arial Black, Eurostile, etc) are just showing up as symbols.
