Dealing with a PSD file - jillc - 04-21-2020 I have had a file sent to me, but I am having problems opening it on Gimp. It was originally a PSD file, which I put through a PSD convertor and I saved it as a PNG file. But when I open it, all I get is the front picture, there are no individual files in it? Is there a way around this, or does Gimp have problems reading this sort of file? Thanks. RE: Dealing with a PSD file - Ofnuts - 04-21-2020 PNG is a "flat" format, there are no layers, so when you converted to PNG you likely merged everything. Gimp can open PSDs (with some restrictions...). I see you are on Gimp 2.8, and IIRC PSD support has been improved in 2.10 (though still not perfect, mind). RE: Dealing with a PSD file - rich2005 - 04-21-2020 A png is a 'flat' format, just a single layer. It does not matter which application you used for the conversion, all you get with a png, is a composite of visible layers. Do you still have the PSD file? Gimp should be able to open most, with restrictions. Text layers are rendered as raster, adjustment layers often give the wrong effect, some up-to-date PS effects do not work at all. But you might get something like this: https://i.imgur.com/mvK5OY3.jpg with a psd file from https://www.deviantart.com/cindysart/art/Hair-stock-PSD-files-173627103 RE: Dealing with a PSD file - jillc - 04-22-2020 Thanks for the replies. I had a quick go on Gimp but it didn't work initially but I will have another go at it. I also have Affinity Photo and have managed to split the different layers on that one. Having attempted to do it again, I managed to do it. Thanks for all your help guys. RE: Dealing with a PSD file - rich2005 - 04-22-2020 edit: Ok, just seen your edit. In the between time I did find that exact file. It does open in Gimp 2.10.18 (at least it does here). It is all in one layer group. One difference between Gimp 2.8 and Gimp 2.10 is Gimp 2.10 opens with the layer group closed. You need to expand it. Easy to miss.
