To Wacom or not to Wacom - Maximus Heronimus - 05-04-2020

Hello my friends,

currently i've got a vintage Bamboo one S

doing it's job on Gimp with Xubuntu as OS
it's pretty beat up from use, and i'm looking for a succesor,

what would be a nice upgrade?

i'm kinda wow'd by the high prices,
and if there is a "B" class brand who does the same as my old Wacom that would be great...

the use of my wacom is without any extra stuff installed, just using it as main "mouse" and edit tool in Gimp

i've plugged it in and it worked... no need for fancy stuff yet, but due the small size it's kinda *bleep* for really small stuff

does the size also increase the ease of use when going bigger? like if i have to do small stuff  i've got to force my hand to work
if i'm going as big as possible does the tiny stuff become easier due just workspace?

I have an even older small Wacom - a Volito2 - still works. At least with linux there is a chance of some support Wink This kubuntu 18.04 / Gimp 2.10.14 https://i.imgur.com/Nz0c7iA.jpg

I can not really give any advice as to best size of tablet, the only one I use is that small 4" x 5" model.

What does come up on the forum is lack of functionality from 'other brands' usually for pressure-opacity. These types often cheap or large size for small cost, such as Huion or XP Pen. Might be OK if all you use the tablet for is an extended mouse but be careful, always sold as PS / Mac compatible, very rarely does linux and Gimp get a mention.

Rich, you appear to know your way around with Gimp and Wacom, am not seeing my new Intuos 5 tablet showing up in Gimp 2.10.14 when I enter Configure> Inputs, though the cursor is moving as expected and laying down paint, just not seeing pressure-opacity working. I'm in Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6 (stuck there to not lose perpetual licenses to After Effects, though Photoshop is no more, which is why I've come to enjoy Gimp). Is there a version of Gimp I should regress to? Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I only know what I use, in this case linux. You need a MacOS user with a wacom tablet and they are few and far between on this forum.

A search brings up this https://machollywood.com/blogs/news/wacom-pen-and-touch-not-working-after-mac-os-mojave-10-14-5-update

Might be someting in there that helps.
