Gimp Shear not completing - DavidChilvers - 05-12-2020

Gimp 2.10.18 on Windows 10

I am trying to shear an image. I select the image (the correct layer is selected) and go through the Shear process, "Shear Selection",  selection of image using rectangle,  Clear show Image  Preview. When I click the Shear button, I get the small timer icon and then I am left with the original image unchanged (trellis) and a moving ants outline sheared. That is it.

Nothing seems to actually shear the displayed image.

When I watched a you tube video, there was no special action to complete the shear.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

David

You will need to give more information, image size, layers, modes etc. The more info the better and a full screenshot helps. I am not able to reproduce a situation where the shear hangs with the progress icon stuck.

Another little video, just a one minute demo, first with the shear tool in layer mode, then selection mode. https://i.imgur.com/FHdmvfd.mp4 It could be you are in selection mode, but difficult to say.

OK I have watched the video and I think that I am doing the same as you are. The progress icon is not getting stuck. The circle in the middle of the trellis was in the image I copied and pasted. The timer appears to finish then nothing else happens. What I see in your video is that the there is a new paste layer created. That does not happen in mine (I do see the paste layer when cutting and pasting). I have captured a video, attached, of what happens for me (see google drive link below). At the end of the video I am cannot interact with the layer, the skewed outline just stays there. I can undo. I can also interact with the Gimp menu items, so Gimp has not crashed.

The background layer is 600 x 400. I have tried it with the image in a separate layer, rather than the background. Same result.

Thank you for your interest. Hopefully the video will answer most of your questions. Please let me know if there is any more information you need.

Making a selection just demarks an area, if you want to manipulate inside the selection copy the contents first.

The selection mode is just that, it transforms the selection, not the contents of the selection. Use the first icon - layer mode.

Applying the transform gives a temporary floating layer. Up to you to either anchor it or promote to a new layer.

Sequence:
make the selection
copy the selection
apply the shear
Anchor the floating selection.

Applying to a single base layer, can cause problems, if the layer has an alpha channel (transparency) expect to get some holes in it, generally the background (other than white/BG color) will be 'adjusted' inside the selected area.

Try to work with separate layers, as earlier demo. No shortcuts, best way is learn by experiment.

 Finally got it. Thanks
