Copying to different document without image size change - Artist - 06-11-2017 This is driving me a bit crazy so I hope someone can help. I'm using the latest version of GIMP. I want to copy a 15cm x 15cm image to a different document. Whenever I do that, it enlarges it massively to about 60cm!!! No problem you might think. Just resize it down again....but no. Whenever I do that, the detail and quality of the image is massively reduced. It definitely does not look like the 15cm image in the first document. When I click to resize the over-enlarged image, I notice that the resolution has changed from 300 to 72. When I try to change it back to 300 and also choose a dimension of 15cm x 15cm, it won't let me. If I insist on changing it to 300, it decides the image size must be no larger than 3.6cm x 3.6cm! I don't understand why this is happening when I'm pasting an image over to a different document. Is it GIMP? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? RE: Copying to different document without image size change - Blighty - 06-11-2017 In Gimp (or any bitmap editor) it is best to think in pixels and not units like cm. What is the size, in pixels, of your 15x15 cm image? What is the size, in pixels, of the second image? It might go something like this (just guessing): Your 15x15 cm is 300 dpi. This will give an image 1772x1772 pixels. Your second image is a much smaller size in pixels. (Maybe something like 500x500 pixels) Also the size resolution is set to 72 dpi. When you paste the first into the second the first appears to enlarge in size. RE: Copying to different document without image size change - Artist - 06-11-2017 The 15x15cm is 1722 x 1722 px in document 1. When I paste it over to the 2nd document it is still 1722 x 1722px but has changed the ppi to 72. When I change the ppi back to 300, it forces the image to be 1440 x 1440. I have described it as best as I can. My question was - is there a way of preventing this from happening? Nevermind, I've figured what the problem was! When I was creating a new document, the resolution was pre-set to 72x72. I created a 3rd document and made sure this was changed to 300 and I no longer have a problem with pasting! |
