Photo to painting - meetdilip - 08-31-2020

I recently saw a video for Photoshop users on how to make photos look like an oil painting. Is it possible to do something like that using GIMP. Or is it better to use Krita ? I know both GIMP and Krita are awesome tools for painting. But I see that some people favour Krita more than GIMP when it comes to painting like projects. My Krita knowledge is very minimal and I have used it like 5 times in my life. And support is pathetic when I tried for Krita. I wonder whether there is a forum like this for asking doubts. Personally, if there is any good video I can rely on I will stick with GIMP and try to convert a couple of pics I have. Any help will be awesome.

No replies?

Plenty of how-to videos around, all seem to be ancient.  In Gimp 2.10 there is the GEGL implementation of the oilify plugin. Filters -> Artistic -> Oilify It does work but on the typically larger images you get these days the effect is not so noticeable.

The Gimp docs have not been updated for oilify, Not much about those Aux Inputs. The first takes a grayscale mask, to determine the intensity of the effect. Not at all sure about Aux2 Input.

Otherwise,
Ask on GimpChat, dinasset has a range of plugins for all kinds of effects.  Then there is the g'mic plugin, where the Artistic -> Stylize filter applies an overall effect from another image. A bit over the top for a simple photo-to-painting but worth a look.

Not Gimp. A really old java program Painterly. see: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Painterly-Java-Application

You can try this freeware, it has many options :https://fotosketcher.com/download-fotosketcher/
Here an example that the software made within a minute :

Thanks. I will try to get an effect plugin.

I want to give it as a gift for some dear ones. I am ok with the extra effort of painting it with hands over the photo. I know in the beginning it won't be perfect. The closest I got was a low poly of myself using a guide on Voronoi diagram. In short, I had to draw dots and join them.

I will compare effects plugins against human effort or find a video on the same. Smile

I have to confess to a bit of art-forgery Wink

Print onto textured water-colour paper. Looks really terrible, the paper soaks in the ink and looks very flat.

Get out some acrylic clear art-mediaum (gloss) and paint over with brush strokes. Brings up the colour and looks 'painted'. If good enought, frame it.
