Editing the text in a photo - njminchin - 01-24-2021
First things first... how to I attach an image? I'm used to Discourse forums where you can just paste an image. I get an error if I try that here saying the POST received too much data...
Hi,
It's been a long time since I've tried to do this in Photoshop, and now in Gimp I'm even less competent!
I have this photo below that I want to replace the text in with a more appropriate one (Comic Sans MS, the worst font ever made).
How can I cover over the original text in the photo, while still keeping the texture of the label and the colour variations intact?

First thing to do is try and remove the text. Never easy to totally replicate a background. For this one which is fairly innocuous, the resynthesizer / heal selection plugins. Filters -> Enhance -> Heal Selection. No shortcuts. Carefully select each letter paying attention to the size of the margins. Took a couple of minutes: screenshot https://i.imgur.com/VxOwuf8.jpg

Then add the text. I put a little curve on to match the bottle using the old curve-bend filter Filters -> Distorts -> Curve-Bend but optional since the other text is flat. https://i.imgur.com/W5Q5xm5.jpg
Adding some texture ? To be honest not much there to add (unless you count the horrible jpeg edge artifacts) Use the text layer as a selection Layer -> Transparency -> Alpha-to-Selection , copy from the base layer, paste as a layer over the text, into linear burn mode, reduce opacity. Onto the text layer and a final reduce opacity to match the rest of the label.

With a plain image like this it is often easier to re-create from scratch instead of editing the existing image.
In the image below the curve was done with
Filters > Map > Map object
(There is a learning curve to use this filter)
