For those who do not know: typically Photoshop.
An adjustment layer applies color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing pixel values
There is no equivalent in Gimp. If you import a PS .psd files with adjustment layers, if lucky they will be flattened to regular Gimp layers, if a more recent PS then they might be ignored.
In Gimp save your work as you go along. Use new from visible as staging posts for keeping whatever is before and the base for further adjustments.
This a bit of a silly example using layer groups, which are not really necessary but can keep things tidy.

A series of new-from-visible and then adjusted. Note going back and changing an earlier operation does not change the final view. These are not adjustment layers, but versions that you can easily revert to if required.

I forgot layermasks before, which are non-destructive.
When it comes to Adjustment Layers, do not hold your breath.
