how to blend straight edges into background?? - kshaeblue - 08-11-2017

I'm pasting an image over a background and the image has very blunt straight edges and it doesn't look very good. How can I get these edges to fade more into the background and stand out less?

welcome to gimp-forum.net

Is the image a color indexed image? Open the image on its own, go to Image -> Mode. If it has 'indexed' ticked (bottom value), change that to RGB (top value)

Otherwise can you give more details of image size, attach a screenshot maybe, or the image itself.

See that part where the red shirt ends right by the letters (I tried to hide it with the letters) that's what I mean

I suspect that part of the problem is that the image with the red shirt has straight edges. It is possible to do something about this, but an image without the straight edges would be better.

Could you post the two images separately? The background one and the one with the red shirt. I'm sure there will be several different ideas of how to combine the two.

The hard edges are the layer edges, might have been that way originally, or maybe came from a selection or crop from a larger image. You could do with a slightly wider image of the person.

Hopefully you have something like this (a quick reconstruction) with all the elements on layers. If you have a single layer, start again. http://i.imgur.com/mqOJW1H.jpg
With the 'person' layer active, add a layer mask Layer -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask Choose the first (white) option.

Click in the layer mask icon to make it active. It gets a white border when active, so not always obvious. (There is a black border when inactive.) You click on left and right icons to swap between them.

Select a fuzzy brush, set a large size 150 - 200, carefully paint on the canvas in black to blur the edges. If you make a mistake, paint it out in white. The X key swaps FG to BG and back - or use the arrows icon over the FG/BG icons in the toolbox.
