Type the required extension directly in filename.jpg ( or .png or .tif or ...any supported file type) 2. If you do use the Select File Type (By Extension) drop down menu. Select the file type, check that it is added as a suffix, close the drop down menu. Plenty room for the export dialogue. In Gimp 2.8 everything was fine and the buttons are always visible.
