Lighting keeps crashing - jediguitar101@yahoo.com - 08-15-2021 I'm trying to use this old "parchment" formula... (https://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/old-pergament-paper) Not all FX are exactly the same, but I'm able to get close enough. However, whenever I try to run the "lighting" effect...with the "channel" being used as the bumpmap...the plugin crashes. Anyone have an idea why this might be? This parchment looks really good, so I'd really like to try this method. (https://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/old-pergament-paper) I remember having a similar problem when a few months ago I tried to follow the tutorial available at: http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=5726 - Plastic Text Tutorial Deviant Art Style It was just impossible to select the saved channel and use it as a Bump-Map in the Lighting Effects Filter and make it work. But I can suggest other options for the parchments and parchment scrolls tutorials: https://rpgmaps.profantasy.com/making-parchments-and-parchment-scrolls-part-1-by-sue-daniel/ https://rpgmaps.profantasy.com/making-parchments-and-parchment-scrolls-part-2-by-sue-daniel/ https://rpgmaps.profantasy.com/making-parchments-and-parchment-scrolls-part-3-by-sue-daniel/ RE: Lighting keeps crashing - Ofnuts - 08-15-2021 You don't need to use a channel. You could just as well create a layer and make it invisible and us it as the bump map. Use a layer but bumpmap separately Some screenshots for you ------------------- Well done for getting that far with a Gimp 2.3 tutorial There is a bug report about this, https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/5305 it might get fixed (eventually) In the meantime a slight change of workflow. Make the black background and paper color layer but instead of the channel Make a new layer and fill it with solid noise Filters -> Render -> Noise -> Solid Noise This is a GEGL filter and renders straight to the canvas. Try and get it something like the pattern shown in the tutorial. https://i.imgur.com/6AZojj2.jpg Turn the visibility of that top layer off, back to the paper layer and bump-map it Filters -> Map -> Bump Map using that noise / crinkle layer as input. https://i.imgur.com/2xfpvwB.jpg Again this is a GEGL filter and adjust the sliders to get that distressed effect. https://i.imgur.com/uzpSi4u.jpg If you want to, now use the Lighting Effects plugin but without the bumpmap option. Finish off with the torn edges (I have my own way for that) https://i.imgur.com/4YCQru7.jpg |
