Some older filters or plugins not working - launok - 10-30-2021 Dear all, I need some advice with filters not appearing after install. I used GIMP many years ago and not very familiar with the new version of GIMP 2.10. In the past I have used Photoshop filters/plugins which used to work but some of them now don't anymore. Another strange behavior I ran across yesterday is when I install the old Photoshop Xero filters it interferes with my Photoshop Artistic sets already installed. When I install the Artistic filters from Photoshop it automatically adds it to the Artistic filters coming with GIMP which is great. But when I install the Xero filters and it shows up in GIMP, it deletes these extra Photoshop artistic filters from the list. It is great that they work both in GIMP but not keeping both in the filters list together. There seems a conflict problem between the filters although they are in completely separate folders. As I mention I am new to this version of GIMP and not sure if I maybe install them wrongly!? And then I have another old Photoshop filter which used to work way back in GIMP, but now install it, it don't show under the list at all. The filter I am trying to install is called "Impressionist.8bf", and is not related to the GIMPressionist which is part of the installed filters in GIMP. I am not sure if I will be allowed to add this filter here and will do that when it's okayed. There are more of my older Photoshop filters I want to install but not sure if it will work or not. I don't have Photoshop installed on my new laptop. I hope someone have some advice regarding this conflict problem or why some old filters don't work. All advice is much appreciated. Kind regards, Laura RE: Some older filters or plugins not working - PixLab - 10-30-2021 Hi Laura, It looks like it's something like a decade you did not used GIMP , as with few searches it seems that "Impressionist.8bf" is a very old 32 bit filter, nowadays, (and your latest laptop as well) we are on 64 bit machines/OS. I found a hint which might help about this filter (you might want to try it) it's a 10y-o post ➤ http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2751&start=0 look for the third post (#3) As for the PS filters in general, they were placed in something alike C:\.....\GIMP\2.0\ long ago, but now with GIMP 2.10 it would look like more as C:\.....\GIMP\2.10\ (note the 2.10 not anymore 2.0) you can find the exact path for your plugins by opening GIMP then Edit ➤ Preferences a window opens scrolldown the left side to folders and click on one of those folders to see the path on the right side. (I'm on Linux so I cannot show you a windows type path, but I'm sure @rich2005 will be able to help you ) RE: Some older filters or plugins not working - launok - 10-30-2021 (10-30-2021, 10:55 AM)PixLab Wrote: Hi Laura, Dear PixLab, Yes, it's indeed so that I have used GIMP a decade ago. I will look into this and see what will happen. It's actually a long time that I am not doing much 2D and more learning 3D. But postwork is much needed on renders to hide some problems, etc. Also sometimes there are fireflies and marks on renders and in GIMP it can be taken out and other nice tools to make renders better or stitch parts of renders together. The filters are great for some extra effects as this Impressionist, etc. RE: Some older filters or plugins not working - rich2005 - 10-30-2021 Gimp on its own cannot use .8bf PS plugins. There is a very old Gimp plugin pspi.exe that can load some (but not all) .8bf see : https://www.gimpscripts.net/search?q=pspi pspi.exe must have worked with impressionist.8bf sometime. I have it in my archive with some Gimp 2.8 settings, however I cannot get impressionist.8bf to show in Win10 / Gimp 2.10 If you want to use it I recommend using IrfanView (freeware - search for it) where it does work. You can always finish off with Gimp. This running 64 bit IrfanView in linux with WINE. Should work even better in Windows. https://i.imgur.com/HAlbuV9.jpg If you want to use Gimp and some artistic effects try the gimp_gmic_qt plugin http://www.gmic.eu example: https://i.imgur.com/bYxmq8z.jpg RE: Some older filters or plugins not working - launok - 10-30-2021 (10-30-2021, 11:28 AM)rich2005 Wrote: Gimp on its own cannot use .8bf PS plugins. I hope another old filter I have, Super Blade Pro will work otherwise I need to reinstall Paint Shop Pro X2 for it works on that, maybe Impressionist also. I have Affinity installed but also here are problems reading older filters, etc. But this tool removing fireflies, etc are great in GIMP for postwork, etc. |
