Background - you have an answer. Laptop, you call it an object and it probably was one time coming from some vector application. Gimp is a bitmap raster editor not vector, so no 'objects' but you can draw in a path outline and use that as a base for painting, building up in layers. The shadow is the one 'effect' that comes with Gimp. This using Filters -> Light and Shadow -> Long Shadowand settings as shown. [attachment=7879] As this example a Gimp xcf file attached with layers and path to show the build up.
