looking for a preview window plugin - MichaJo - 10-20-2022

I've searched the net and found some tipps and hints for a workaround and some requests in bugzilla and GitLab which are closed...
So what i'm looking for is a floating preview window in single-window mode. The "New View" is just a new tab.
In multi-window mode i can get this floating window but can't pin it on top so i it disappears behind the canvas when i start editing.
Or is there a way to let the New View stay on top?

Michael

example multi-window mode:

I do not know of any way in single window mode.

Using the old utility deskpins https://efotinis.neocities.org/deskpins/ A Navigation Dock can be fixed above the Gimp main window. Snag is the dimmed display.

Otherwise, still with deskpins but multi-window mode but does not update as you edit. screenshots https://i.imgur.com/AA8KEov.jpg

Thanks! Wasn't aware of "deskpins" (or had forgotten...). Will give it a try.

Other ways for a new window, start a second Gimp and open the same image

the switch is

-n, --new-instance
Start a new GIMP instance.

Windows ➤ Dockable dialog ➤ Navigation window, then either you have some way of keeping it above everything (fairly straightforward on my Linux, but you may have Window utilities for this), but also since it is "dockable" you can add it anywhere in your Gimp window, so it's always in sight,  but then its size depends on the size of the dialog it's docked in. To add it to an existing dock, you can also use the Add tab menu of the doc (in the Dock menu menu).

That doesn't work as desired. I need to zoom independently.
And secondly as rich2005 already wrote: "A Navigation Dock can be fixed above the Gimp main window. Snag is the dimmed display."

Thanks for your suggestions.
As long as there is no plugin or similar i will switch to multi-window mode while editing and pin the preview-window (New View).
