Snap to Layer Edges or Boundary - gotanidea - 12-14-2022

In Photoshop, there is Snap to Layer option, to snap the cropping to an edge of a layer.

In GIMP, we can use Layer > Crop to Content to crop based on a layer boundary, but there is no option to snap the cropping to an edge of a layer.

Please check the screenshot below and see the layer with a red rectangle in it:

Layer Example

How to snap the cropping to the bottom edge of the layer, since there is no Snap to Layer option?

We can do this easily in Photoshop:

Someone else will be able to explain it better than me but you will find that if you use the crop tool options you can. Prolly just a different wording than snap is all.

I think this is what you searching for, in the gimp menu : View / Snap to Canvas Edges

What kind of came to mind was:

1- Create guides delimiting the layer.

2- Use the Crop Tool with the option 'Snap to Guides' enabled.  Crop

Crop Tool has no option to snap to an edge of a layer

It's just for snapping to canvas edges, not an edge of a layer

Thanks, but I can't find New Guides from Active Layer. Do you use a plug-in or script to use that option?

Move layer after 'View / Snap to Canvas Edges'
[attachment=9157]
Or use the 'Alignment Tool'

A diiferent way Wink

In the crop tool options enable crop current layer only That constrains the crop tool to that layer.

That crops the layer. If you want to crop the whole image to the size then toggle crop current layer only off and apply the crop.

I think this is the simplest way to do it. Thanks
