Curving a background image around an object - Bsquared88 - 12-14-2022 I hoping to find out if it's possible to take an image used for a background and create a curve in it. The ideas is to create a rotunda-like appearance with the background being the walls and another object being placed central to the rest. I could be up in the night on this. Most definitely it's above my current GIMP abilities. I don't even know what to search for in tutorials or in this forum to find where to begin. I did find the warp tool, and it has possibilities I think but it's not working to create the desired effect. It looks more like a mess as if I was stirring in one paint color into another. It just got sort of swirled around. I found my cursor and fingers wouldn't cooperate to result in an even warp. RE: Curving a background image around an object - Ofnuts - 12-15-2022 Too late for a full explanation, but look at Filters > Map > Map object and map to Cylinder. You may have to flip you image since you'll be looking at it from the inside of the cylinder. The whole image is rolled on the cylinder so you will also have to add transparent sides. RE: Curving a background image around an object - Ofnuts - 12-15-2022 Time for some more detail. Assume you want a background made from this: [attachment=9160]
Filters > Map > Map object to Cylinder will wrap the whole image around a cylinder, like the label on a bottle. The center of the image will be in in front of you, and the left and right edges of your image will be joined together on the back of the bottle. But what you want is the other shape, what you would see through the bottle on the back of the label, and you don't want th elabel to be fully wrapped either. So:

(note that the dome shaped monument to the right of the Eiffel tower has moved to the left.
You can then call Map object. The settings: [attachment=9162]
Options:
[attachment=9163]
(where Bonaparte's tomb is back to the right of the Eiffel tower)
