Edit -> Copy. You can close the selection now or later if you wish. The copied selection becomes the very first brush in the brushes dock, the 'clipboard image' brush Make a new layer under the text, and with the paint tool draw a connecting line. Click on the start point. Hold the shift + ctrl keys to draw a horizontal line. Click on end point.
