Centering text - sl60 - 10-09-2023

I'm having a problem centering text layers. I select the text>Alignment Tool>Center Icon--and nothing. Same with Justify. What am I doing wrong?

One way to do this is Image > Guides > New guide by percent vertical by 50%.
Add some text.
Then use the move tool on your text box and you will see a tiny cross in the middle of it.
Align this little cross with the vertical guide

Once you've selected the Alignment Tool, before to click on the button to align, you do need to click on the text to select it with the alignment tool once clicked on the text you will see 4 white squares appears, then now you can click on the button in the Tool Options to align your text

You need to align relative to something and the default "First Item" might not do anything.

I find using a selection often the best bet. Make a selection covering the width of the canvas. Invoke the Align tool. Click on the text to make it the "Target". Choose Selection from the drop-down menu. Click on the icons.

Then it goes like this animation https://i.imgur.com/J39ZI1g.mp4

Edit: Is it really the Alignment tool you need ?  You can use the Text Tool options.
Make the text box the width of the canvas. Text box now 'Fixed' Use the Center Justify icon.

edit again: Never got a reply when last asked. Are you really still using Gimp 2.8 ?

I've been selecting the text first, then the Alignment Tool, then the center option.

As I said, the text tool choices don't work, either. I don't ave a problem with image layers, either, just the text layer.

No, it's 2. 10.12.

Vocabulary interpretation problem? the text first... nope, I did not write that, and sure enough that won't work it that order Big Grin
  1. Select Alignment tool first,
  2. then click on the text on the canvas (not on a transparent part, but the text itself)
  3. then the center button/option
But... what is defined in the tool options? Center "Relative to" what?

No, it's 2. 10.12

OK, nothing works for you.
Gimp 2.10.12 - a bit on the old side. Any reason for this ? Maybe using an old MacOS or linux OS ? Latest is 2.10.34

No matter, one last try this time as a video.  3 minutes   https://youtu.be/__9e-dzLO3c
