angle of a path information ? - denzjos - 10-13-2023

I've traced some straight paths on an existing map. Is there a plugin that shows the angle of each of the lines, referring to zero degrees or 90 degrees? The gimp plugin 'Path Details' only provides the path length and number of points.

I'm not aware about a plugin, but the Measurement Tool can give you angles, it's manual, though and hopefully you just have few nodes/paths

The Measure tool shows you distance and angle between two points:

You will note that Gimp and GoogleEarth don't agree on the heading(*). If you zoom in you will see that the yellow line from GE zigzags around the straight line from the Measure tool, because the line from GE is a projection of the orthodromic route, so GE's heading is more accurate that what you can measure in the map with external tools.

(*) Needless to say, I triple-checked that the map was upright before taking the screenshot.

I knew the measure tool but it seems this tool is pixel related, so I can't find the right angle this way. Even 'snap to path' don't snap to the path.

Ofnuts has a plugin path-csv.py which unsurprisingly exports the path coordinates to a text file.

Maybe you can use those values in a spreadsheat. All depends how many paths you have to process Wink

rich, thank you for the tip. The plugin only give the coordinates of a path, you probably calculated the other numbers yourself as I understand.

Correct, Use your favourite spreadsheet I am sure you have one Wink  I am a long-time gnumeric user. Just a quick lash-up as a test. You  probably need to adjust for whole-circle bearings for various direction paths. Gimp coordinate system does not help.

It is not a plugin I use, no idea why the values are replicated 4 times but the csv copies/pastes in and I ignore the extra columns.

Another suggestion, Inkscape shows path data during drawing.

Because it gives the coordinates of both anchors and tangents (ie, triplets) and if your path is a straight line, between two points, the tangents at each end have the same coordinates as the anchor.

I'm working on a topic about RDF using 3 receivers on a object at a certain position. I want to explain more than just using the phrase "with triangulation." Now I have all the values to calculate the whole. Using Gimp for the drawing, Ofnuts for the path things, Ottia Tuota for cutting / slicing paths and Rich for explanation. Thanks all.
