3D like effect on frames or boxes - OJS - 05-06-2024

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone could help me with tips on how to draw/make a 3d like effect of a box or a frame around a box that has a real sense of depth. What Im thinking of is something like the image below from the game "Hearthstone". If you look at the picture you can see the frame of the box looks really 3D with a lot of depth, and I also really like the way they use metal corners to, as it kind of adds to the 3d feeling.

I have tried to use the built in border effect (filter-decor-add border) like in the other attached image, but it feels very bland and looks at best like a photo picture frame, which is not the effect I am after.

I have also looked at some tutorials that use plugins with bevel and emboss features, but they have been outdated so now the links dont work, or the settings for the plugins have completely different options.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Well, you deserve a reply even if it is not much use.

There are any number of scripts and plugins, some better than others , to form a frame around an image.

The example you give is quite complicated, lots of art-work involved in that one. Embellishments like the corners you might find as vector (svg) images.

To get you started, just for a frame, try the gimp_gmic_qt plugin http://www.gmic.eu for an installer. There is one section for frames. But then up to you to make the contents of the frame. This one a simple shape but bump-mapped and finally a 3D-rotate.

Hopefully, other ideas will come along, Keep experimenting.

Edit. Worth asking on gimpchat.com. example useful plugin here: http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=17321

I wonder if you couldn't do that with selections and chisel/carve. I'll have a look in a few and post my result here

Well it is not exactly as you would like. But I used the chisel /carve script for this.
Opened a canvas a little larger than you want. Colour it with the colour you need. Then using the script - Chisel off edges - outside at 25 - leave the rest as is. Then carve in at 12 inside giving a bit od roundness to it.
Add a pattern layer to give it a 'rough' look  then use overlay layer mode.
Make sure you image has an alpha channel and using the rectangle select, select the very outside of your frame and crop to selection. Using the rectangle select again select the inside of your frame and delete. Crop to content just incase you didn't select close enough first time. Save as a png if you want to keep the transparency.
Or you can use the script  rich pointed you to.

Hi Sally,

Do you remember this post on GimpChat?
I think it could also serve the OP as an option.
