Remove text from scan - Aquilax - 05-10-2024

Hello, I'm trying to translate a children board game because there is no official translation.
I have scanned some cards and I would like to remove the text (in a nice way) from the pictures and replace it with the translated text.
I tried the healing tool but the text is not really removed completely, it is still visible as an halo.
This is most probably given from the not uniform background color produced from the print process and taken over by the scanner.
What is the best practice in this case to remove the text from the scan?
Note: I wanted to attach an example of the scanned cards but it didn't work because it seems to be to large. I have uploaded it to ImgBB (https://ibb.co/w6Rf7Lh)

For that type of image, I would use the gimp_gmic_qt plugin http://www.gmic.eu - there is a Windows installer.

Then use one of the inpaint filters.

Paint a mask over the text. Use the pencil tool (so no anti-aliasing)
Colour does matter, the default is Red RGB (255,0,0) but since there is red in the image maybe change to Magenta RGB (255,0,255)
Apply the gmic filter and wait.

A quick example of that. https://i.imgur.com/BRSlnNK.mp4

Sorry for the brief description, Friday afternoons are a couple of beers with friends Wink

Aquilax,
After finishing reading your post I decided to try something.
In fact, I haven't even read rich2005's post, which I believe already has an excellent solution for your case.

My approach was to apply the Heal Selection plugin to remove the original text.
Then I applied the Healing tool with an opacity of 27 to soften the effect from the previous step.

Possibly I should have chosen a better font, but I leave that up to you :-)

This is what I got

After watching rich2205's explanatory video on how he recommends treating this case, I was curious about the difference between applying heal selection (used in my process) and Inpaint [Multi-Scale] used in rich2005's process.

I was surprised by the quality of Inpaint! I didn't even need to apply the Healing Tool.

rich2005, you talking about Friday afternoons and beers with friends made me wishful.

But here the weather has been rainy and with some gusts of wind, so I'll have to settle for a beer during my lunch. It's 10 AM now so I'll have time to keep the beer cold!

If the OP wishes, I leave the result obtained with the application of Inpaint.

Thank you very much for the replies and suggestions.
I tried it out the gimp_gmic_qt plugin with theĀ [Multi-Scale] effect and it's really amazing.
Thank you again!
