Are these types of 'animated images' possible to do with GIMP?  If not, what does it take to make one and is it a specific style?  Thanks

It would be easy to do using the JimmyMarco falling snow script released over on GC 4 years ago.

As a plain looping animation yes, but what you are showing is a fixed image to which random falling leaves are added by program, done for instance with Processing

I've never heard of that but will look into it.  Thanks for the heads-up.
