Missing Dockable Dialog - gremlinkurst - 10-01-2024
I can't use the updated versions of GIMP; they are totally USELESS; they are incapable of preserving or manipulating transparency in images. Please refer to attached image, "Missing.png." There's supposed to be an interface there that details selection dimensions. It USED to be there, but I accidentally undocked it, and I can't get it back. If I can't restore this functionality, I will be forced to abandon using GIMP...and I have no other application that will fit the bill. My preferred version is GIMP 2.6.11. I've tried resetting values in Settings to default, but that worked for CRAP; the interface is still deficient.
I can think of only ONE solution, and it is unacceptable: Perform a clean reinstall of my OS, and reinstall all my preferred programs. this is RIDICULOUS. Help is no damned help whatsoever.
EDIT: I'd add text to the image to further explain the problem presented, but GIMP is totally screwed on my computer, now.

Having said that go to the GIMP top menu Windows ➤ Dockable Dialogs choose the one you want to activate
Documentation for GIMP 2.6 about docks/dialogs ➤ https://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-concepts-docks.html , you will learn how to move them around and other nice features about dock-dialogs

Is it really the only thing you can think of ?
Gimp 2.6 / Win 7 In pictures:

(1) Add the missing tool options which opens as a floating dock
(2) Click and drag from next to the tab into the "drop dockable dialogs" area.
(3) Optional, lock the tab in position.

There is another option that does not involve re-installing either OS or Gimp.
Rename C:\Users\"yourname"\.gimp-2.6 to maybe C:\Users\"yourname"\.gimp-2.6-backup
Start up Gimp and it makes a new default user profile C:\Users\"yourname"\.gimp-2.6
Copy any required resources from the backup to the new user profile.
This was a favourite in the dim and distant past on the Usenet comp.graphics.apps.gimp group. Which now seems superseded by Reddit

This said, can you explain "they are incapable of preserving or manipulating transparency in images." because yes, there are some differences(*), but if you insist things can still work the old way.
(*) Between 2.8 and 2.10, but if you stopped at 2.6, then you didn't see them?

No, it doesn't work the same way. I can't get the newer versions to render transparency at all. The resultant PNG images might as well be friggin' JPEGs.

I was profoundly frustrated. I found the solution: Delete ALL Windows registry entries excepting those relating to application installers. Now it's back. Of course, now I have to retweak all my settings, but while somewhat tedious and time-consuming, I can fully restore the application's customized functionality. It would have killed me to no longer be able to rotate images to specific degrees.

We all produce PNGs with transparency in Gimp 2.10 here so it is possible. Something happens at your end and makes you draw a wrong conclusion. Please share with us a XCF that doesn't produce a transparent PNG with Gimp 2.10.
Gimp doesn't use the registry to keep its settings, and you can save all your settings by copying the Gimp profile directory.
