Problem creating meme text, previously worked - padre_two - 10-28-2024

I've been using GIMP forever to create meme text (shadows behind the text). My process hasn't changed, but all of sudden today, it's not working. Here are the steps I usually do:

1. Open the image
2. Add text
3. Select the Text layer and select "Alpha to Selection"
4. Select "Grow" under the Select tab and choose size
5. Create a background layer
6. Move the background layer behind the text
7. Select the background layer
8. Select "Edit" and choose "Fill with FG Color"

Normally, it creates a black shadow. Now, nothing.

Any ideas? I'm using v2.10.36 on Windows 11.

Thanks!

Windows10 , gimp 2.10.36 : no problem wit your workflow. Do you use the right color to 'Fill with FG Color4' ? If you fill with the same colour as the background layer colour then you see no 'shadow'.  Big Grin

As denzos post above and

Do you get the crawling ants showing for the selection ?
Does the fill tool icon have a "barred" indicator. That can happen if the transparent layer is locked by accident.

Probably a tool setting. changed and not noticed. Try Edit -> Preferences -> Tool Options and Reset Saved Tool Options to Default.

No, the background layer is transparent. I changed the FG color to other colors, and still no joy.

It wasn't the "Lock pixels", it turned out to be the "Opacity". Somehow it got turned down to 0. I noticed on your screenshot, it should have been 100. That did it! No idea how that got changed.

Thanks!
