How to change a photograph to look more like a drawing - Tygra - 12-03-2024

Hi there,

I am working on the image in the attachment.

If you see the planets in the sky don't really look like a photograph. However, the beach and the ocean do. My question is: how can I make the beach and the ocean (which is one layer) look more like the planets. I am very inexperienced and have thought of using the artistic filters, but really I haven't got a clue what I am doing.

Can someone help please?

Many thanks,

Tygra

Well, basically a blur, Look in Filters -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur.

You could try something more "arty"  say an Orton effect (look it up) There are some old scripts for this but this one is interesting http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=21457  download the windows version and follow the installation directions. Once installed, find it in Tools -> GEGL Operations -> Orton (in the drop down list)

Play with the sliders. An example:

Like rich mentioned, use blur : what I tried :
Copy the image to a new layer
Blur the new layer (Filters / Blur / Gaussian Blur - use size 5 for X and Y)
Set the layer opacity on the blurred layer on 70%
Erase the sky area with the planets (easy with the erase tool - size 380 / Hardnes and Force 80)
I think you may keep the clouds blurred (don't erase the clouds)

Thanks guys for your help in this, and wow, denzjos, that looks awesome!!

I tried the same principle with another image, but I had to lower the opacity to 40%. Otherwise, it looked too blurred.

Hi again guys,

I am now working on the following image.

How can I make her look like she is in the picture more? I have tried experimenting with levels and colour balance which has improved it slightly, but I am still not happy with it.

If you could help that would be great.

Thanks,
Tygra

First: The image you posted is in color indexed mode. This limits your image to 256 (maximum, can be less) pre-defined colors. Probably comes from the background image. Convert images to RGB mode Image -> Mode -> RGB

Then: Asking a question like yours, post your image as a Gimp .xcf with layers (saves us poor folks having to separate your image)

You could try applying a curve Colors -> Curves

Hi Rich, I am extremely sorry about that. However, I tried to attach the xcf and it side the file was too large.

I was wondering, you know the turquoise blue of the ocean at the right hand side? Should the women have any of this colour on her?

What I did (a quick workflow) :

Select the girl, copy the selection to a new layers and use 'color/levels/Auto Input Levels', Hue Chroma, Hue Saturation, 'Colours/Brightness-Contrast/Contrast' on the different layers and blend them with different opacity to own taste. The result is not realistic because the sun is low on the horizon, so the girl is in backlight and on a photo she should be dark. Now after little corrections, it look like a flash is used to lighten the girl.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Denzjos, that look amazing! I really like the way you have made it look like a flash.

However, I wanted to give it a go making the girl look darker like you said, because the sun is behind her.

What's your honest opinion of my attempt at it?
