Krita 'float' selection - Zero01 - 12-12-2024

Does anyone know if Krita has a feature akin to GIMP's float selection, or should that be selection float...
Anyway you know what I mean Big Grin
Even if there is, as I'm using Krita on my Android phone, it might be the case that I cannot use it anyway as this version of Krita is optimized for tablets.

I do not think there is a (temporary) floating layer funtion.

You probably do this already, Make selection / copy / paste. That gives a new layer which can be moved. Ctrl-E merges with layer below.

....and that is the same as Gimp 3.0 now uses. No floating temp layer.

Just FYI, you can still have floating selections if you want. Use Ctrl+Shift+L to create one, or check the menu (Edit -> Paste As... -> Floating Data).

We got feedback during 2.99 development that a number of artists use floating selections as part of their workflow, so we left it as an option while changing the default paste behavior to be a new layer.

...a number of artists.." (maybe cartoonists ?) All to save using the move tool perhaps, so slightly smoother work flow.

I never had a problem with Gimp 2.10 floating layers, but it is favourite gripe for beginners / refugees from Photoshop.

There a couple of "wrinkles" for shift-ctrl-L
It does not work from image-to-image, so back to copy/paste.
Using it on a solid layer and it cuts rather than copies

....then there is ctrl-C versus shift-ctrl-C and the clipboard but that is another issue.

rich2005: People who use GIMP for drawing rather than photo editing in general. Same category of people who prefer destructive filter editing (they didn't want their brushes affected by the filter after applying it) and why we added the "Merge Filters" checkbox to the filter dialog.

Thanks for the video demonstration! We'll add it to the bugfix list. Smile

Thanks for the replies, yes @rich2005 I thought about the layers idea and have successfully used it for a little animation, but there are times when I just need to 'cut out' a small part of an already single layered image and move that small part to another area within the image.
I suppose I could just free-select that small part  and copy/paste it to the new location and tidy up/fill/obscure the old part pre-move... Although this Krita has a number of issues so not sure how straightforward that'll be!
One good thing is I just realised I can plug my mouse into my phone via my OTG cable, which is a game changer I can tell you ! ... Cheers!
