GIMP V2.10.18
#1
I'm a new user and am still learning how to navigate the various options etc.  I have noticed that when I am adding text the default is Sans Serif  62 px. This is
huge and forces me to adjust the text size every time I use GIMP and edit / add text.  Could someone please let me know how I can change the default font and size.

thanks Brian

Not difficult:

Set up the font and size in tool options then open Edit -> Preferences

In the Tool Options section click on Save Tool Options Now
In the Input Devices section click on Save Input Device Settings Now
Ok that and close. Example screenshot https://i.imgur.com/hNZOQ0O.jpg

You do not absolutely need to untick the Save xxxx on exit in this case as shown in the screenshot.
Although not a bad idea to set Gimp up to start the same way on every start-up.

Hi Rich2005... thanks for your reply to my issue...

-  the only time I see any font and size is when I select the TEXT icon and start to enter
text either in a new canvas or an existing image ( I then see the small pop-up window with
this info which I can alter).
If it is an existing image and I position on existing text then I see the font and size
I originally used to enter the text. As soon as I move to another position on the image
    it resets to -  Sans-serif 62
-   Also, I can not locate any option along the top tool bar on the main GIMP window which allows me to choose
text font, size etc. and I looked everywhere on it.
- I tried entering text (which allowed me to choose font and size) and then followed your steps below and then closed
GIMP and restarted it. I got the original default font and size, not the font and size I used.
So, obviously my attempts to set the new default font and size didn't work.

thanks Brian

When you enter text, there are two places where you can set the text characteristics:

  1. In the Tool options dialog (the one on the right, in the picture). This dialog is normally a permanent part of your Gimp UI (not floating as displayed here), and displays the options for the current tool. If you don't see it, Windows>Dockable dialogs>Tool options. This dialog set values for all the whole text, unless superseded by the other one. These options are the one that you can make permanent, as per Rich's indications.
  2. In the text "on-canvas" dialog (the one above the text). This dialog sets values for the text selected (I,IM, in he picture), like in word processors.

Ofnuts post covered the difference between the on-canvas tool options and the Tool Options dock. If you have lost the dock then my advice is reset Gimp back to defaults before fixing any of the various tools including fonts.

This demo video  https://youtu.be/WjGi2LuaQB8 duration 5 minutes
Starts off with resetting layout back to default.
Setting up a default font and size for when you start up.
Gimp will remember the last setting for any particular tool per session so I think what you also need is set a preset for the default font..
The help page for presets is https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-dialo...ets-dialog
and a bit at the end of the video.

Hi Rich2005 and ofnuts…  thanks for your replies on this issue... I've reviewed the video and done more poking around
and I have set my default font and size... as well, doing that I also tinkered with font colors and I'm good to go with that as well.
So, thanks again...
