the bottom horse head for example. It's not completely selected. It's like it is fading in the second picture

Hard to tell because the pictures aren't the same size... Fading would be the result of an incomplete selection, and a partial selection could be due to a partial brush opacity (soft brush or opacity setting) when painting the quick mask. The QM isn't very good at showing incomplete opacity.
