For a making weird text one can use the 'spacetypegenerator' :

One can transform a text with a bunch of sliders and if one is satisfied with the design, one can make a screendump and load it in gimp. (File / Create from clipboard)
To remove the background (if necessary) white or other colors in gimp : Colours / Colour to Alpha
By clicking on the 'select button' (top right) one get different generators.
