Removing checkerboard fill

I downloaded the current stable version this morning. I have a line drawing of a star.  The checkerboard pattern is outside  and inside of the star line drawing.  Is there a way to get rid of all the checkerboard both inside and outside the black line drawing?  Thanks in advance to all who answer.

So it is not Gimp 2.8 as you put as the version you use .

What format is the line drawing of the star ? Did you download it from some internet site ? If you did chances are the checker pattern is part of the image. 
A gimp image with transparency shows a checker pattern that is 'virtual' just an indicator of transparency no need to 'get-rid-of'
