How to change the color of an object in a photo

I'm new to Gimp and photo-editing. I took a photo, and there's an unpainted white panel that's distracting. Here's the photo: https://imgur.com/8xVe5Xv

Is there a way to add something to the panel?

Is there a way to change the color of the panel to black or grey?

Since the panel is a 3d object, it would not have uniform level of black or gray. Also, it would not be perfectly black since no real-life object is perfectly black.

Any uniform color is going to show out. My suggestion:

• Create a square layer (side size: about the height of the panel)
  
• Set the brush to "Dissolve" mode and medium opacity
  
• Fill it with random strokes of colors
  
•    
  
• Use the Perspective tool to map the layer on the square
  
•    
  
• Use Contrast to reduce contrast so the panel blends better
  
• Use a layer mask to left the arm show
  
•    
  

(low quality JPEGs to keep image file size under the 500K limit)

You can completely get rid of the panel by using the heal tool with a custom brush

Just by pulling the exposure back in 'color' after selecting the board, you can keep the 3D look, shadows etc.
