Installing Photoshop filters/plug-ins in GIMP

Greetings,

I'm running gimp 2.10.20 on a Windows 10 pro machine.

I recently tried to upgrade a set of filters/plug-ins that I have been using successfully for a while.

I followed the instructions to tell gimp where to find plug-ins and send a message to say that the new folder and being recognised and will be saved.

I closed the gimp started it again and recognised performed and displayed the plug-ins/filters.

When I tried to apply filter to an image and image it did not work..

I would be grateful for any ideas on how to fix this

What are the path to your plugin? screenshot about your Edit > "prefences" > path to the plugin folders? (there is 2 folders)
What type of plugins? .scm or .py?
Which plugins? Name? path in the GIMP's menu?
What do you call it did not work ? does it throw an error?
....

You can run some old PS .8bf plugins using an equally ancient Gimp plugin PSPI You can get the plugin here: https://www.gimpscripts.net/2020/09/pspi-107win32.html

I did try this just recently in a Win10 / Gimp 2.10.28 and providing the plugin is compatible (pspi is 32 bit and the .8bf are to suit) and it still works.

Gimp is not the only application for these old filters, Irfanview and the old Win XnView can also run them.

If you are thinking about something a bit more recent like the (monster that is) Nik Collection then this is really a stand-alone application with a .8bf PS launcher. Then easiest way is install the Partha version of Gimp, together with the large Nik application files.. The Partha version contains the Gimp plugin launcher. Last time I tried I found Nik very flakey.

Often no need to use pspi, you can usually get the same effect from one of the 570 filters using the gimp_gmic_qt plugin.

I wonder if you can help me. Earlier in the year I was successfully using PSPI tool and running Redfield plugins in Gimp 2.10.

HP rebuilt my computer and I am trying to reinstall these plugins. I have tried putting them in the Gimp plugins folder; the AppData Roaming Gimp plugins folder; a desktop folder and nothing seems to work.

I am getting error messages and I am just stuck at getting them reinstalled. I know the PSPI will only use the 32 not the 64 bit 8bf's.

I don't understand some of the error messages. But the one where it says it can't be found and it is sitting right in the folder it says it can't find it in seems really wrong.

Is there a way to upload the screenshots?

There are two different sets of PS plugins concerned, all .8bf but not all are equal.

The old ones work: This a Win10 / Gimp 2.10.32 / pspi 1.07 https://i.imgur.com/kBPEP1l.jpg All this installer does is copy the various files to the location specified. I do not think dropbox is a suitable location but who knows, it might work. It adds a few (12) registry enties nothing special.

I would try again with more modest location and make sure the pspi setup points there.

The error messages come from more recent plugins, fractalius3D / sharplet / unobtanium and I get those as well. These PS plugins come with quite large installers, about 3 to 4 MB, considering the size of the plugins, 0.3 > 0.5 MB Still only get the .8bf + a couple of reg entries installed. From the Redfield site these require CS5 or better, pspi will never work with these.
