Plugin for refreshing old photographs

Hi all!

I'm new to Gimp. I want to make a photobook for my parents 80th birthday. I have some old photos, that are faded and strangely colored. I googled a bit and found a plugin (restore.py from https://github.com/stongey/PhotoRestore, written in python) that was really old but with great results. I tried to install it, but with no luck. I finally installed Gimp newly with python and some other packages (took me some hours to try all the hints) but still that plugin does not appear in the menu. I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 with Gimp 2.10.34 and Python 2.7.

Are there any other plugins working like this one that are easier to install?

And if not, how can I refresh the old photographs? Are there any good tutorials / videos? And didn't find good one when searching. Maybe I didn't use the right terms for searching.

OK, Using Ubuntu 20.04 and Gimp 2.10.34 Big question, where did you get the Gimp 2.10.34 ?

I use (k)ubuntu 20.04 and the default Gimp is 2.10.18 The recent Ubuntu Gimp does not (normally) come with gimp-python support.

Did you install Gimp 2.10.34 as a SNAP version from the Ubuntu software center ? No Python support there.

An easy way for python support is to install the flatpak version from https://www.gimp.org/downloads/ That comes with gimp-python 2.7 installed

Other ways, There is a Gimp 2.10.34 from a PPA https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/+...buntu/gimp 

Again no python, but can be added using an appimage launcher see: https://github.com/TasMania17/Gimp-Appim...-for-Linux

First stop find out which Gimp 2.10.34 installation you are using and give some details here.

In addition to above. Just got round to looking at those python plugins you referenced. Old, made for Gimp 2.8 but seem to work except for Restore3.py which has a hard encoded directory location - lines 490, 491 - which needs editing.

You probably do not need the latest and greatest Gimp 2.10 If you get a linux portable. an appimage Gimp 2.10.22 that comes with python support.

Make it executable, run it. It makes its own Gimp User Profile. Put the plugins in ~/.config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10/plug-ins/ Make them executable.

Thanks for your replies! I must admit, I don't know where I did get my Gimp version from. Maybe I downloaded it from the gimp page? It's been quite I while that I installed it. But so far didn't use it.

I didn't have python support after installation, but I added it with a tutorial I found on an old german Gimp forum (not in use anymore). Python should function, at least it shows me "Python-Fu" in the "Filters" tab. It just doesn't show the restore filters.

I also tried flatpak Gimp, but it didn't show the restore filters either, only the "Python-Fu" Console

Did you get the filters with an older Gimp version (2.10.22)? Which python version is installed on your computer? Maybe mine is to "new"?

Just a brief recap.

If you have a Ubuntu 20.04 (and later) and install from the repository ( Gimp 2.10.18 is default for 20.04) then there is no gimp-python package available. Your python plugins do not work

From the Ubuntu "Store" you get a SNAP version of Gimp - no python - Your python plugins do not work

If you install the Gimp flatpak it will be the latest Gimp 2.10.34 and it does come with gimp-python support. The Gimp user profile is in a different place to a regular Gimp it is buried in a hidden folder.
~/.var/app/org.gimp.GIMP/config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins

The other alternative I mentioned is a 'portable' Gimp 2.10.22 which comes with python support. One big executable. That screenshot is that version. You might have to install the old fuse package but if you run in a terminal it does tell you.

Those old plugins not showing ? (1) are they in the correct folder (2) did you make them executable (3) look at the screenshot again they register in a menu Restore.

That looks like it is the flatpak version. A test installation and it does look like there is a problem with the default plugins folder.

Regardless, make a new "easy to find" plugins folder and put your plugins in that. Use Edit -> Preferences -> Folders and add that folder location in the plug-ins section
