Put something in a hand
#1
Information
Good day!

I am new to Gimp and already learned a lot from the forum, thanks for everything.
However i have 1 question.
I would like to photoshop something in a hand, a phone for example sometimes.
However, when I paste a new layer over the existing photo, the thing covers the whole hand. How do i get the fingers from the background to 'hold' the item in the hand? so that the hand is behind the item, but it looks like the fingers hold it.

thanks in advance!!! you are doing a great job all Smile

I mean something like this:

But when i try it, the phone covers the whole hand, also the thumb that's covers it

All comes with practice. My usual way is using a layer mask (sometimes several)

see: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-layer-mask-add.html and https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Layer_Masks/

Using a layer mask to hide the original phone

The replacement item might be a single file or more than one in a layer group https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-layer-groups.html Scaled and rotated

Put the two together.

Thanks a lot! That's already very helpful!

But what if the hand is empty and i want to put a phone in it? Then the phone covers the whole hand.
Do i have to cut fingers from the bottom layer and place them on top?

Yes copy and pasting is required. Never really satisfactory. It becomes an artistic exercise. Do you have any artistic skills ? - I don't.

This the open hand (why are all the images plastered with logos these days - ignore my gripe)

Add a layermask to show the phone and hide thumbs + fingers

Thumb and fingers copied and pasted as new layers. Rotated and moved to suit, masked to hide unwanted parts. Remember open-hand fingers have no finger nails, clenched hand fingers have nails. If required you have to paint them in. A quick and not so good example:
