.jtif and .avif images
#1
Hello everyone,

For some time now, when downloading images from the web, I have come across images of the .jtif and .avif types.

For me, these are new formats; I don't remember having seen them before.
Fortunately, GIMP had no problems opening them and allowing me to edit/use these images.

Do these types of .jtif and .avif images have any advantages over those we already use routinely, such as .png, .jpeg, .gif, .tif, etc.?

Is there any place/entity that provides this type of information in layman's terms?

Thank you!

As I read it, JTIF is good ol' TIFF format, when you use the JPEG compression (instead of the LZW/Deflate/PackBits ones).

I found part of the description found on the website that denzjos linked to very informative:

Quote:"The primary use case for the AVIF format is as a more efficient alternative to traditional image formats, such as JPEG and PNG, for web and application development .By leveraging the advanced compression techniques provided by the AV1 codec, AVIF files can deliver comparable or superior image quality at significantly reduced file sizes, which translates to faster load times and reduced bandwidth consumption for websites and applications.

In addition to its performance. benefits, the AVIF format also supports a wide range of advanced features that make it suitable for a variety of specialized applications. For example, its support for high dynamic range (HDR) imaging and wide color gamut allows for the creation of visually stunning images that can be displayed on the latest HDR-capable devices. Similarly, its support for transparency and animation makes it a versatile option for creating complex graphics and user interface elements.
"

It seems that now in addition to .gif, .png and .webp we have another image format supporting transparency.

Let's wait and see how the GIMP developers will or won't take advantage of these new image formats.
