Gimp 3.0 AppImage and G'Mic
#1
Hello everyone.

I hope I haven't overlooked a thread on this and am making a redundant post.

On discuss.pixls.us, there is a thread with David Tschumperle commenting that he had G'MIC ready for Windows users on Gimp 3.0 but had not got around to modifying it for Linux users of Gimp 3.0.

Discussion on Gimp 3.0 and G'MIC

This is my go to place for hard to find information about Gimp and its plugins and would like to ask if anyone here has information on how to use G'MIC with Gimp 3.0 RC2 AppImage(Ivan-HC) using Linux Mint 22.1.

And on a side note, to not have to create another thread, will plugins and scripts that work on Gimp 3.0 RC2 work on the regular Gimp 3.0 when it is eventually released or will they have to be reworked in some fashion?

Probably. I see things added/fixed but no big incompatible changes AFAIK.

That's nice to know, Ofnuts. I'm trying to get all the current, useful to me, plugins that are available for 3.0RC2, it'll be good not to have to start all over again.

Thanks.

Not quite correct, no gmic site Gimp 3 packages provided. The existing code does compile but at the moment there is only linux Gimp 3 installations (that I know of) for ubuntu 24.04 (from PPA) , Debian 12 sid (also Arch - which does not figure anyway) So the majority of Gimp 3 users will be Windows and they have one.

To work with an appimage you need to compile gmic_gimp_qt using the appropriate libgimp2.0-dev (+dev dependencies) files.
So you can compile for ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 but these do not work with the Ivan-HC appimage largely Arch based. Same applies to the "official" gimp.org appimage, looks like based on debian but which version?

The only appimage / gmic I have working at the moment is the Gimp3 RC1 from TasMania which is based on ubuntu 24.04

Maybe more options will become available in the future as things progress; it's no big emergency or anything to have G'MIC and a Gimp 3 AppImage working right now. I'm not very good at compiling anything and I don't want to have to use Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12, if that is indeed what you are suggesting.

I switched to the Ivan-HC AppImage, from the GIMP-3.0.0-RC2+git-x86_64.AppImage at Gimp.org, on your previous advice to enable the usage of the resynthesizer plugin. Several others now also will only run on the Arch based image, like Beautify, etc..., as I'm sure you already know.

Tasmania quit providing his Gimp 3 images after Gimp.org starting doing appimages and his aren't available for download any longer.  But, I don't really want to go back to Gimp 3 RC1 anyway.  For now, it looks like Gimp 2.10.38 will be my option for G'MIC.

Thanks for all the information.

The only thing I have to say: Gimp 3.0 (etc ... etc) is always in great change. I continue to use the Ivanhc Appimage in the GIT version (based on the Archlinuxcn package) which is updated every day, just because I like surprises.

If I had to give advice to a dear friend I would say to him: wait for Gimp 3.0 to be definitive and do not look for trouble with things in development that change every day and uses 2.10 where things work predictably.

I always have a wide choice of scripts that do not work well and that I have to correct ... and when things seem to go, here is the surprise: you have to start again.

If at the moment Script / plugin for GIMP 3.0 are few, it is because it is better to stay calm and wait for it to be stable.
