Eraser Stopped Working

Alright, still trying to figure this out since the eraser is still not working for whatever reason.  If I start over how do I create a layer mask then paint it black?  Do I do this before I upload the image?

Make sure you have not got a tiny selection somewhere (in which case you can only act within the selection and most of the image is protected). So try Select > None.
