Drawing with the brush creates jagged lines
#1
Hi,

This is a problem that seems like it came out of nowhere, and I have no idea how to solve it. Whenever I use the brush tool and try to draw anything using my mouse, what comes on the screen is a horribly jagged line. See below for an example:

I thought it might be because "Snap to Grid" in the View menu was turned on, but it wasn't. Turning that on only made it worse:

I don't have the most steady hand, but there's no way it's that bad. So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

There are 2 things you can try.

First
Use Smooth Stroke. (See attached image)
When using Smooth Stoke the brush becomes laggy. This is because it "averages" your movements before drawing on screen.

Second
Use paths. Draw a path, then stoke the path. This gives a very smooth line.

Thanks for your response! Smooth stroke is an option, but even then it isn't as smooth as I feel it should be, plus the lag annoys me. Would you mind briefly walking me through drawing and stoking a path, though?

Here are two useful threads on paths:

Paths Basics

Working with paths

To draw and stroke a path (very briefly)
(See images below, second image should be viewed first)

1. Open the Paths Dialogue.
Draw your path

2. Return to Layers Dialogue
Optional - Most often create a new layer for your line
Edit > Stoke Path
Change the parameters to get the effect you want.

Are you using the pencil or the brush? The pencil has no anti-aliasing.
