Outline/echo around an image?

I don't even know what to call it but I'm trying to get the outer lines around the mtn dew logo and I can't seem to get it. The closest I've gotten is growing the selection but that rounds the edges of the selection. Any ideas?

Sometimes this effect is a called a shadowmat, although probably not in the example you posted.

This kind if typography is mostly done in a vectorgraphics program with offset path, but you can do it with a trick in Gimp too:

To get sharp corners you stroke the path with white, while having the Quickmask active.

The Quickmask technique steps are:

01. Have your text ready on one layer and convert it into a path.
02. Activate the Quickmask (Shift + Q) and make sure white is your FG colour.
03. In the paths tab, stroke the textpath with a thick width.
04. Deactivate the Quickmask - a selection will appear.
05. Convert this Selection into a Path.
06. This might need some clean up with the Paths Tool.

Another way but not as convenient

Build up the logo from bottom to top using paths  for each outline to preserve the sharp corners. see: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-using-paths.html

Something like this:
1. The base image, with the paths drawn round it, as outlines for each color. https://i.imgur.com/SpsoLxl.jpg

2. Keep each part on its own layer, using the outline for the orange colour which is the largest area, put the path to a selection Orange foreground colour (fg) and fill. https://i.imgur.com/iRBpKqU.jpg 

3. Another layer on top of that for the yellow, use the path-to-selection, yellow fg, and fill https://i.imgur.com/UDYPYa9.jpg

4. The yellow line is a little different, make the path active, yellow fg colour, stroke the path Edit -> Stroke Path https://i.imgur.com/hJnm1Yb.jpg

since I had to reproduce that for the screenshots, you might as well have the Gimp file .xcfgz compressed, just open it up in Gimp. It was a bit quick in the making, you should be able to improve it.

I totally do not understand what you are doing there.
How did you get the grown outlines ? Are you growing a selection and edit the path ??
