Two places you can configure the grid Edit -> Preferences -> Default Image -> Default Grid

A per-image basis Image -> Configure Grid see: https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-image...-grid.html Save the image as an .xcf and those settings are saved with the image.
That is quite a large canvas for a 1x1 grid, some zoom settings and it will blank out everything so check View -> Show Grid and View -> Snap to Grid
