Actually I made a post with that technique, but deleted it because I thought it was too complicated. Now restored as post #3 in this thread.
But the easiest technique IMHO is to use a blur, whic is the equivalent of a linear gradient. If you want to change that gradient, remember that you can apply Levels or Curves to the mask.
