The whole window setup is kept in the sessionrc file in your Gimp profile. But by the time you are familiar with that file you will have gotten the gist of the Gimp "docks". Once you understand you drag things by the tab and not by the title bar (like web pages in Chrome/Firefox) and that the hihgjlihgt you get teh the cursor in on the edge of windows indicates that you dialog will be insert in a new tile, things become really easy.
