No solution for you, I do not do any games graphics.
However, You stand a better chance of a sensible answer if you give:
1. The operating system you are actually using (Windows 95 - I don't think)
2. The version of Gimp you are using (Gimp 2.4 - I don't think)
A layer group mask has a pass-through layer mode (Gimp 2.10)
or
Maybe a new from visible and apply a layer mask to that.
