Can I make a comment just on computer use. Using a Mac does make using Gimp any easier. Gimp is developed in Linux and then ported to Windows and OSX.
It is therefore meant for linux/Windows type of hardware.
You are not going to get very far with a trackpad. My advice is go and get a regular mouse. Either an eye-watering costly Apple one to match your eye-watering costly computer or a more reasonable priced one (and hope it works).
Many functions require a right mouse button, so you do need that. https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/ri...k-3610351/ A center scroll-wheel/button helps but you can get away without one.

In common with many plugins, the plugin is grey-ed out until an image is open. Some filters might be greyed out if the image is in the wrong colour mode. Get used to it.
