Have you tried adding the fonts to the Gimp font folder https://i.imgur.com/Ez2tEfD.jpg and check if they show in Gimp? https://i.imgur.com/PK8I6P4.jpg If they do it might prove something.
I will not comment on DaviesMedia other than frequently gives poor advice on Gimp usage Hope it is better with Mac.

Rich, I am using macOS Catalina 10.15.13, which I think is pretty up-to-date, so may be different than your experience.
I opened up the GIMP fonts folder and it was empty, I am not sure what that means. How do I add the Rennie font to the folder?
