Ofnuts memory has not failed. There is symmetry painting coming to Gimp.
In Gimp 2.9.5 there are options for 'mirror' - horizontal, vertical or central then a 'tiled' option and this one, a 'mandala' screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/hZ059j9.jpg paint-in one and the others are replicated.

edit: just seen from your profile you are using WinXP...and...OSX.....and linux Nothing like having all options available
