Files in the wrong place?

Thanks for the quick and comprehensive reply.
Of all the packages, the only one I think I may use is the contact sheet, and as you say, there is a new version.
The resynthesizer and heal selection I already use frequently.

My Gimp was downloaded from the Ubuntu repository.
