I used (X)Ubuntu for years before the frustration of out of date packages pushed me to Arch. It wasn't just gimp, but it played a big part. It took a while to learn a new ecosystem of course, but I never regretted my choice. If you want to stay on the cutting edge, you might consider changing to an Arch based distro, or Arch itself. Manjaro is the most mature and supported AFAIK.
Of course you could always build everything yourself as @rich2005 suggested. I went this route for a while but it was just too much to keep up with for myself.
Whatever you do, DO NOT go back to the dark side!
