Much as I dislike "click-n-wish" and although Windows explorer has scarcely improved since Win 3.1, Explorer does sort by name or date and order.
If you can fit drag-n-drop into your workflow might go like this:

drag into the toolbox, not the canvas
Dragging images to anywhere but the image space does nothing for me when Gimp already has an image open. The images don't load. I get the drag-and-drop mouse icon, but when I release nothing happens.
I won't be using drag-and-drop, but it's interesting that it doesn't work.
